2: Industrial Locomotives

Although the Hunslet Engine Company became most famous during the 1940s when it produced a design for the War Department that subsequently became known as the Austerity’ class, it had already established a reputation for quality with its range of industrial locomotives which were similar in appearance to the products of the neighbouring firms of Hudswell Clarke, Kitson and Manning Wardle. Most of these locomotives were 0-6-0 tank designs, both saddle and side tank variants, and examples of these are shown in this section.

A pair of Hunslets at the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway’s Embsay station on 6 December 2008 sees (from left to right) 0-6-0ST 3788 ‘Monckton No 1’ standing at the platform whilst 0-6-0ST 3783 ‘Darfield No 1’ pilots Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T 1450 (in the guise of Thomas the Tank’) as they await departure with a Santa Special to Bolton Abbey.
